Defense of Democracy Presents a Film Festival to Open Minds & Raise Funds

Defense of Democracy presents an opportunity for members to inspire your communities to engage in our work and raise funds to continue our mission of educating the public on the importance of the public school and library systems in a functioning democracy, and providing training, tools and coordination for strategic volunteer engagement in communities across the country.

We are seeking hosts and sponsors for our inaugural film festival. This is an opportunity for you to engage with your community, let people know about Defense of Democracy, and become more involved with our work with an engaging, educational event.

The film we’re presenting is “1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture.” This is an award-documentary that speaks to the root of what we believe in—that the accepted canon is not always true, and that a healthy democracy must allow its citizens free access to many different points of view. This film tells the story of researchers who trace the origins of the Christian anti-gay movement to a mistranslation of the Bible in 1946, casting doubt on a biblical basis for LGBTQIA+ prejudice.

“1946” was written, directed and produced by a team of award-winning filmmakers. You can meet the film’s creative and research teams here, and view a trailer of the film below.

Hosts will choose the date/s, time/s and location of their viewing/s within the window of April 25-28, 2024.

Hosts must register to volunteer by April 20.

Our hope is that this year’s Defense of Democracy Film Festival will prove to be an enjoyable experience for you and a mind-opener for all of your guests—so have fun, don’t worry about how many attend or how much you raise. Whatever you do will be appreciated!
